Japan is a weird country. In fact, the word weird doesn’t even begin to do justice. In the land of the rising sun, they have a pretty high tolerance for weirdness. Apparently it’s just a part of the way things are in Japan, the motto being, the weirder the better.

And in a bid to show exactly HOW weird this island country can get, Japan has granted citizenship to the most unexpected person, animal, monster thing: GODZILLA!

The giant lizard has been granted a special residency  in Shinjuku area (home to the busiest railway station in the world) of Tokyo, Japan by Tokyo civic leaders. Their reasoning behind this was quoted as follows- “Promoting the entertainment of and watching over the Kabuki-Cho neighborhood and drawing visitors from around the globe in the form of the Godzilla head built atop the Shinjuku Toho Building.

Apparently it has been issued a citizenship certificate, which is shown below:

Which translates to the following:

Name: Godzilla

Address: Shinjuku-ku, Kabuki-cho, 1-19-1

Date of birth: April 9, 1954
(Godzilla is a Piscean)

Reason for special residency: Promoting the entertainment of and watching over the Kabuki-cho neighborhood and drawing visitors from around the globe

Previous visits to Shinjuku Ward: 3 times; Godzilla (1984), Godzilla vs King Ghidorah (1991), Godzilla 2000 Millennium (1999)

To celebrate the oncoming of its new ‘resident’, the Shinjuku City Office distributed 3,000 copies of Godzilla’s certificate to delighted fans on Saturday.

People were seen portraying different reactions on Twitter..

Could you BE any wierder, Japan?!
