Let’s face it, it’s not a perfect world with sunshine and rainbows! Evil does exist and no matter how conscious or careful you are, there are always chances that you might end up in an unwanted situation.

With the growing impatience and anger in people in today’s world, there are more chances of you getting caught up in a situation that you would totally want to avoid. It can be as simple as a road rage incident or as complicated as a mugging or kidnapping attempt. What should you do in such a situation? Sure, letting things take its course is one way to go, but it won’t always guarantee your safety.

Here are some basic self-defense techniques which are really simple to learn and will help you in messy situations:

1. Flat palm into nose

The nose is a very vulnerable part of the body, crashing your hand flat palmed into opponent’s nose is a sure way to get him off balance.

2. Headbutt, simple yet very effective

Our head is surprisingly stronger than you might think. In close quarters, head butt is a good way to get your attacker stunned which will give you more time to plan your next action.

3. Ear slap

This move is an easy way to stun your attacker which will give you ample time to decide your further course of action, i.e. to fight or flight. To do this, cup your hand and slam it into your attacker’s ears to send a blast of air, which will pressurize their ear canal. It’ll definitely stun your opponent and will throw them off balance.

4. Eye gouging

This move may sound kiddish but is as effective as it gets. Even the strongest of the person is bound to get disoriented when you jam your fingers in their eyes.

5. Learn to free your wrist from grab

6. Use your surroundings

Look for things in your surroundings which may come handy! Even a key can inflict serious damage when used properly.

7.  Don’t stand still in a fight

One of the biggest mistakes people make in a fight is standing still at the same place. Keep moving to make yourself less accessible to body grabs and punches.

8. Don’t waste your power in throwing punches like an amateur

Doesn’t matter if you’ve seen all of Mohammed Ali’s matches or if you’re an ardent follower of Ronda Rousey, if you’ve not been trained in self-defense avoid using complicated moves. Chances are, that you’ll end up wasting your energy in worthless punches. Instead, use calculated amount of force to hit your opponent at strategic points.

9. Learn the weak pressure points

A punch below the ear or a kick to the knee will inflict much more damage than a slap to the face.

The most important thing is to remain calm during the chaos and not let your anger cloud your judgement. Always remember, the main purpose of self-defense is to get away from the trouble!
